Cricket is a sport which is currently played by 108 countries internationally, but the western world still don’t know about this sport. ICC (International Cricket Council) is trying hard to make Cricket a global sport. But many of you still may not know what actually a game of cricket is and how it is played.
What is Cricket?
In basic terms, Cricket is a bat and ball game. The thrower of the ball is termed as bowler and the player with the bat is called as a batter (previously called as batsman). Now a question arises, what and how batter and bowler comes into play and is there a team on the field. In Cricket bat, the upper and slim part is called the handle and the lower part is used to hit the ball.
Cricket match has 2 teams with 11 players each
In a match there are two teams with 11 players each. As we told you that there are batter and bowler involved in the game. Generally a team have 5-6 bowlers and other are batters. This combination may vary as per the team’s needs but usually there are 5 bowlers and 6 batters playing in a team.
How does a Cricket ground looks?
Cricket is usually played in an oval shaped field which has grass all over the ground. If you are looking at the Red arrow shown in the picture, it is pointing towards a bit white color rectangular shape, which is termed as Pitch. Pitch is the place where actual game is played but we’ll tell about that later, just to not make it hectic to understand. Whereas the Black arrow is pointing towards three poles standing on both sides are called Stumps.
The blue arrow is indicating to the smaller circle in the picture. As shown in the picture, it is called as 30 yard circle. While the white arrow is signaling the bigger circle. The bigger circle’s line is called as boundary line.

How does a Cricket match start?
We are onto a quest to learn that what is Cricket. Now we know that this game is played by bat and ball and every team plays with 11 players. Before the match a toss happens and whichever team wins, they got to chose whether to bowl or bat first.
Suppose a team elects to bat first, then 2 batters from the playing eleven will come on the ground. While the other team will come on the ground with all the 11 players. A bowler will be picked to throw the ball. He will bowl first 6 balls, which completes an over. An over can be explained as the bowler has thrown the ball 6 times without any rule broken.
Batter number 1 and 2 will start the game the opposition team will place their players accordingly to save the ball from reaching the boundary. In a 20 over match the bowlers will continue to bowl until the all the batters of opposition team are out or the 20 overs have been completed.
