The Foundation laid for NBA

The topic of NBA was discussed much later, it all started in 1935 when the National Basketball League (NBL) was formed. Initially, it was known as the Midwest Basketball Conference but two years after its establishment name was changed to NBL. The National Basketball League was growing in popularity and almost a decade later another league came into the market which was termed as BAA (Basketball Association of America).

When BAA was formed, they used to organize matches in Ice Hockey stadiums. From the very start, BAA tried to reach the audience present in the larger cities, but that was not easy as NBL had bigger and more popular stars on their side. Both the leagues had a rivalry which lasted for three years and finally, the time came when history was made.

How was NBA founded?

It was believed that by the year 1949 NBL and BAA, both were having financial problems and as a result, both companies decided to merge. It was 3 August 1949 when NBL and BAA officially merged and established a new organization which was termed as NBA (National Basketball Association).

To this day majority of people believe that the foundation year was 1946, the year when BAA (Basketball Association) was inaugurated. This is because the newly formed NBA was run by the people who were managing BAA earlier. A few teams are still active in NBA, who were part of BAA decades ago.

First Chairman of NBA

Because the National Basketball Association was created by merging two companies, it was a debatable subject whose representative would sit at the topmost chair. After discussions it was decided that Maurice Podoloff will become the president of NBA, who was earlier the President of BAA at the time. On the other hand, Isaac Walker Duffey became the chairman of NBA, who was previously the president of NBL.
